I saw this interesting post on Slashdot called Is Science Fiction the Opiate of the Geek Masses?. Now while I am a nerd I am not a geek but being a Science Fiction fan I read on. I was introduced to the Mundane SF. This is a movement that says Science Fiction should be based on legit science. The details are somewhat laid out in Why Play These Tropes and Not Those Others. I find this very interesting but, I have a couple concerns. SciFi geeks already focus on the details of current scifi and how things should work. An example….Questioning the warp drive in Star Trek or the beaming technology. Since it is science infused fantasy there isn’t any point and they still do it. Now being type A myself can you imagine the neurotic mess scifi fans would be in trying to make sure the true science always agrees. And how long would it take to get up to speed on a new series. Would I have to buy a book on whatever science discipline it was based on? Now the other side. I was raised in a law enforcement family (mom’s a criminoligist and stepdad was CHP) and I love the Law & Orders and CSi’s. A big part is I understand a lot of procedure and the thinking. I love science so would I enjoy true scifi even more? Could this get a whole generation more science literate? If so, can that BE a bad thing?

Well, supposedly it has happened. Deep Throat has come out in the open. According to an article on MSNBC it is W. Mark Felt, though Woodward and Bernstein will not confirm nor deny. They claim to keep their promise and not release the source until the source dies. If it is true, it is weird to have the infamous “Deep Throat” unmasked. I am young enough that there has always been a Deep Throat. It wasn’t until just a couple years ago I found out what Deep Throat was named for;). (I cling to my few vestigies of naiveness). Well, on to a new era I suppose…..

The Corner called this “The President holds an excess embryo”. I don’t know the story behind the picture but how can anything that produces this not be considered life? I am 29 weeks pregnant right now and I can feel this baby roll, kick and hiccup.I have had a few ultrasounds and have been able to count his fingers and his vertebrae. This is life….

I saw this posting on the Corner on abortion and future pregnancy. After going into early labor with my last baby, I can’t imagine knowingly taking that risk. There is research out there that it is bad for women and now on future babies… One of the biggest justification I have ever heard for abortion is “it just isn’t the right time for a baby” or “later when I am ready”. Now it seems that women who use this as a tool to control their reproduction really aren’t in control. It just furthers the old addage…”Make up you mind before the windows get steamed up”.

Well I figure it is time for my first post;). I saw this great post on slashdot on Mathematicians in Hollywood. I thought of my best friend Sara and all the things we could have done if we got our Math degrees. Who knew we could be in Hollywood and perhaps even cool;)! I am sure that in the future my posts will be much more insightful and deep:).
